Gustav, also known as The Black Knight, is a character in Octopath Traveler. He appears as Olberic's competitor in the tournament finals at Victors Hollow, and is the boss of his Chapter 2.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Gustav wears a full body armor and black shield and sword as well as a red cape. While his character sprite doesn't show his helmet, gloves, and cape, he wears then during his boss battle against Olberic. He has short straight black hairs and no visible distinctive signs, outside of his black armor.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
Prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Gustav joined Werner’s band of mercenaries, the Black Brotherhood. He and Gaston made friends with Erhardt, who acted as their mentor as they were new to the group. The group disbanded after the fall of Hornburg, and the mercenaries went their separate ways.
Gustav ended up in Victors Hollow, where he makes a name for himself as a fearsome new competitor in the arena. He faces off with Olberic in the finals, and upon losing to him, agrees to disclose Erhardt’s location and reason for vengeance.
After Olberic's story, he appears in The Whistlewood, vowing to repair his reputation.
Gustav will begin battle by increasing his actions per turn to 2. All of his weaknesses will be locked. Upon defeating one of the two Shield Wielders, he emotes Gustav Let His Guard Down!, which will unlock Gustav's weakness to axes and dark damage. When both Shield Warriors are defeated, he emotes Gustav is Defenseless!, and all of his weaknesses will be unlocked.

Trivia[]
- Although he appears with a cape and helmet in his boss sprite, concept art depicts Gustav without either of these features.
- Gustav's armor sports a bit of rugged asymmetry from the left shoulder down the arm, boosting his defense.[1]
- Gustav's design is likely a reference to Gustav the Black Swordsman from Saga Frontier, one of Square's legacy PS1 games.
